Project Description

Contemporary metal clad 2-storey extension to an existing Grade II Listed barn conversion, providing additional living accommodation and alfresco dining experience on the first floor terrace (perfect for those summer BBQ’s!).

Amberd Granary is a restored and converted agricultural building , uniquely constructed from both a combination of brick, local stone and timber frame. There are two individual listings, one for the barn itself and one for the walled garden that forms part of our client’s land.

The extension has fundamentally improved the accessibility and visibility to the historic walled garden. The design is sympathetic to its context and suitably subservient to the existing buildings.

The palette of external materials of corrugated metal panels for the walls and roof, together with natural wood doors and windows, were chosen in collaboration with the council’s Heritage Officer to reflect the agricultural nature of the existing buildings.

The selected materials both complement and contrast with those of the main barn, in an appropriate and modest manner.

The original design concept and planning stage drawings are credited to fellow RIBA member Joshua Hancock with detailed design and construction drawings by Stone + Partners.

‘Stone + Partners have steered the project (and us!) very professionally, from start, to the very end, and I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done.  If anyone asks me for a recommendation of a local architect / project management team, I’ll certainly be recommending you’.

Project Description

Two-storey extension to the rear of a semi-detached property in Taunton, providing much needed additional living accommodation for the family including open plan kitchen/dining area, utility room, playroom storage at ground floor, and new master bedroom with en-suite and enlarged family bedroom to the first floor.

The timber frame was selected in favour of traditional construction following appointment of the contractor who had their own timber workshop, and savings were identified in terms of labour and speed on erection on site, as well as reduction in wet trades during the winter period.

Worked in close collaboration with Karesa Timber Frame to achieve high levels of insulation and airtightness with the timber frame construction.

“Cherwyn Developments have employed the services of the team at Stone and Partners for many years and found them to be professional, proactive and have a collaborative approach to delivering planning designs and working drawings. In these challenging times they are commercial in their approach to design and technical solutions and conscious of our increasing build costs”

Project Description

A competition bid for a contemporary take on almshouses for a local trust.  The building aimed to provide several residential units as well as office space on the ground floor. Key to the project was the provision of sufficient outdoor amenity space and views of nature for all occupants. The scheme focused on the use of a simple palette of good quality materials with careful brick detailing that referenced the surrounding historic buildings but didn’t juxtapose with other more contemporary neighbours.
