Project Description
Following a legacy from a benefactor, Somerset Cricket Museum, a registered charity, commissioned Stone + Partners to redesign the interior of their museum building. The key elements of the brief were to maximise space to enable the museum to display an increasing catalogue of material as well as improving accessibility.
Stone + Partners developed the project from initial design through to gaining planning and listed building approval and onto completion in the spring of 2012, worked closely with the Cricket Museum, Local Authority, English Heritage, museum designers Smith and Jones Design Consultants, and the main contractor J Layzell and Sons Ltd.
The alteration works comprise a new frameless glass entrance door and glazed screen above; glass entrance lobby, staircase, mezzanine area, reception desk, display boards and cabinets. The works retain and enhance the historic fabric of the building, replacing recent additions where felt appropriate.
The new elements are clearly identified as modern additions to the original historic structure. The scheme lightens the overall impression of the space, opening up views through the building whilst providing more space for display.
The completed scheme received a commendation in the Somerset Historic Building Awards.
