Taylor Boarding House, Kings School – Window Replacement

Taylor Boarding House, Kings School - Window Replacement

Project Description

Stone + Partners gained Listed Building Consent for the renovation and replacement of the windows at Taylor Boarding House, Kings College, Taunton.

Following a detailed window assessment and report, it was established that many of the original steel windows no longer seal closed. Structural damp was being caused by the cold bridging these malfunctioning window elements were allowing.

Secondary glazing had been fitted to one of the dormitories to assess it as a possible solution, but this had resulted in an acceleration of the corrosion of the steel window frames.

The Facilities Management Department of the school has been forming an excellent record of conservation wherever possible, and ongoing improvements to the existing facilities.

On this occasion the welfare of the occupants of the dormitory prompted a desire to improve the fabric of the building to solve damp and leaking issues, and to improve the energy rating of the property.

Close liaison with Crittall Windows to formulate double glazed windows units to match the existing original steel windows was critical to getting this window replacement scheme agreed with the local authority conservation officer prior to the listed building application.

Project Description

This brand new Sixth Form Centre and Library was opened for students at Taunton School from September 2022.
The former upper and lower dining rooms have been transformed into a modern sixth form study centre with study pods, a social space and gender neutral toilets, and the newly relocated Carrington Library.
Décor in the refurbished sixth form centre has been designed with the help of Year 11 and Year 12 students.
This exciting project is part of the wider campus development plan, which includes new a state-of-the art international school and improved sports facilities.

‘Taunton school engaged Stone and Partners to provide architectural and contract admin services for the delivery of a significant development project over the summer of 2022- the creation of our new Carrington Library and Sixth Form Centre.
These spaces were to be constructed in the heart of our beautiful Grade II listed school building , providing modern, contemporary facilities without detriment to the ancient fabric of a landmark building in Taunton.
The works took place throughout a busy Spring and Summer term with little or no disruption to school life, despite being at the very heart of the campus.
Stone and Partners worked closely with the school and its key stakeholder communities throughout the entire design and delivery of the project and the result is an incredibly sophisticated but functional scheme that has attracted praise and interest across the whole school and beyond. The success of this project, in terms of visual appeal and the enjoyment our students and staff realise, from its use, is incredible and Stone and Partners can be justifiably proud to have completed this part of our school’s development history. The Library and Sixth form centre will serve our school admirably for years to come.’

The English teaching department was also to be relocated in new classrooms. A new block was therefore commissioned on the edge of the school campus. The design had to take into account adjoining residential areas and provide a stimulating teaching resource.
